Staff Bios

Ben Hingle
Band Director

Ben Hingle holds a Bachelors Degree in Music Education and a Masters Degree in Tuba Performance from Winthrop University and is in his second year as the Director of Bands at Rock Hill High School.  Prior to joining the Band of Distinction Mr. Hingle was the Director of Bands at Cheraw High School in Chesterfield County and AR Rucker Middle School in Lancaster County.  Mr. Hingle is an Alumnus to the Band of Distinction so to come back and be the leader of this band program is not only exciting but also an honor and privilege. 

Bands under Mr. Hingle’s direction consistently perform at a high level at State and Regional Competitions.  Last year the Rock Hill band program earned the Outstanding Performance Award for the 15th consecutive year.

Mr. Hingle’s professional affiliations include the South Carolina Band Directors Association, The Palmetto State Teachers Association, Phi Beta Mu National Music Honor Society, and Phi Mu Alpha Music Fraternity.

Mr. Hingle lives in Rock Hill with his wife Cindy who teaches high school English and their children Alex, 5 and Elizabeth, 2.

Randy Grantham
Associate Director of Bands

Randy Grantham is a 1983 graduate of Rock Hill High School, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of South Carolina in 1988, twenty-seven hours of completed Master’s Degree coursework in Educational Leadership from Winthrop University, and certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards since 2005.

Mr. Grantham began his 29-year career at Indian Land High School in 1988, served as an assistant at Fort Mill High School, served at both Great Falls High School, and Andrew Jackson High School, and has been Assistant Director of Bands at Rock Hill High School for fourteen years.

He has served the South Carolina Band Directors Association since 1992 in two positions. First, as the Chairman for Region Five Band Auditions and Clinics from 1992 through 1995, and secondly in the same position for Region Three from 1995 through the present. 

Mr. Grantham has had the honor of serving with many outstanding groups of young people during his career, resulting in a number of shared achievements: Eight South Carolina State Marching Band Championships, Twelve Upper State Marching Band Championships, Two Bands of America Regional Class Marching Band Championships, 30 ratings of Superior at South Carolina State Concert Band Assessment, and Four Hundred plus students named to South Carolina Regional and Allstate Honors Bands.

He has served as an adjudicator and clinician for both marching band and concert band events in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia, and holds professional memberships in Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Fraternity, American School Band Directors Association, South Carolina Band Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference, Phi Mu Alpha Professional Music Fraternity, and Kappa Kappa Psi Band Service Fraternity.

Mr. Grantham credits a great deal of his success to his wife Connie, Band Director at Fort Mill Middle School, a past President of the South Carolina Band Directors Association, and member of the South Carolina Band Directors Hall of Fame. Connie has been a source of both inspiration and knowledge since they first met in 1985 at the University of South Carolina. The Grantham’s have two children. Dottie is a former Allstate flutist, now married and living with her husband, a former United States Marine Band Clarinetist, in Ames, Iowa. Will is a former Allstate Trumpet player and high school golf team member, currently a junior at Clemson University.
